Get Evens $11.18 Normally, when a band decides to scale back production and embellishment on a record, it's really no big deal. Many bands decide to drop the overdubs, or reduce the keyboards, or only work with a live horn section, for example. But when your band consists of two people, one playing baritone guitar and singing while the other drums and sings, "scaling back" seems like an impossibility. On the first Evens release, Ian MacKaye and Amy Farina had scaled back the angularity and electric dominance of their prior bands (Fugazi and Warmers, respectively) and chose to keep the music subtle, rooted in atmospherics. Adding to the stripped down lineup, Farina and MacKaye added piano and mood through post-production to give the album a rather warm, close feel. Although at times some of the tones could be jarring or the rhythms jagged, moods and atmosphere would swirl in and out, giving a slightly less than organic feel, leaving the listener safe in the opinion that a lot of the record could not be re-created on-stage in such detail. For Get Evens, their second full-length, the Evens must have agreed, and embarked on a recording process that was much more immediate, eschewing piano and overdubs, recording the songs with a more "live" sound, culminating in a record that is rough, angular, and wholly organic. But that is only half the picture. Both Farina and MacKaye spent a great deal of time in their previous bands dealing in what can only be called more abstract lyrical ideas. Sure, there is no mistaking the meanings behind Fugazi's "Great Cop," or "Give Me the Cure," but much of that band's conceptual fare was left up the ear and mind of the listener. With the Evens, MacKaye and Farina have obviously decided to leave that mindset behind, making pointed protest and criticism without flinching. "Everybody Knows," with its scathing indictment of the real purpose of politicians and George W. Bush, pulls no punches. There's no doubt as to what "you fabricated your way in here and everybody knows...you are a liar" means, or whom it's meant for. Being from D.C., and living in these times, it's no great surprise that the targets of MacKaye and Farina are the elected officials currently residing on Pennsylvania Ave. and others inhabiting federal offices. One only needs to take one listen to "Dinner with the President" to get the idea. But the easy political targets aren't the only ones examined on this disc. The overreaching of government resultant from cashing in on fear and paranoia in the years since 9/11 get a fantastic (and arguably best so far in terms of songs on the matter) reading on "All You Find You Keep." The emptiness of plastic culture ("Cache Is Empty"), consumerism ("Eventually") and -- most important to the overall theme of the record -- freedom ("Get Even") are examinations that gain so much from the decision to keep things as raw and real as possible. The Evens' first disc was pointed and protesting, to be sure, but here, on Get Evens, the raw feel |

Get Used to It $8.47 The most surprising thing about Get Used to It is that the Brand New Heavies sound very much like an honest-to-gosh band instead of the instrumental unit with a hired frontwoman they always have been. Out of the BNH crew for a decade, vocalist N'Dea Davenport returns and it's both familiar and just like starting over. Young upstart hunger drips out of the opening "We've Got," a slinky slice of funk that introduces what's going to be a mature album with more punch than ever. There are the usual horns and "music turns me on" type lyrics plus Davenport's just perfect voice, but Get Used to It resists wandering into the musical theatrics this skillful group could be accused of overindulging in the past. While the glorious "Music" flirts with electronic dance music and the cool "Don't Know Why (I Love You)" lays some unneeded strings onto its soulful groove, the majority of the album is stripped-down and wonderfully tight. The songwriting is right there, too, with Davenport delivering a handful of empowering or poignant songs that temper drummer and other main lyricist Jan Kincaid's cool acid jazz anthems. As the organic and easy rolling "I've Been Touched" delicately comes apart and fades, it's hard to recall a time this band have delivered an album so well constructed start to finish. They've traded fireworks for fire here, and no one who loves gutsy, vintage grooves should be caught without a copy. ~ David Jeffries, Rovi Performers: Chris Worsey - Cello; Katherine Shave - Viola; Neal Evans - Clavinet; Sy Smith - Vocals (Background); Anna Giddey - Violin; Ari Raskin - Guitar; Dominic Glover - Trumpet; James A. Hunt - Saxophone; Jan Kincaid - Vocals (Background), Percussion, Drums, Keyboards, Vocals; |

Organic Mineral $33.59 If Joëlle Léandre has a rich discography, especially when it comes to the period 1999-2001, Kazue Sawaï remains severely underdocumented -- a shame. This CD from the French label In Situ preserves a very good concert by the two women for Radio Bremen, recorded in June 1999. To play with the bassist, Sawaï chose as her primary tool the bass koto. It turns out to be such an excellent decision that the first minutes of the first track leave the listener wondering who's on the left and who's on the right. Only when Léandre starts bowing the strings is the solution given. The two musicians use high amounts of finesse, slowly building momentum, retracting when things could get too confrontational (there's a nice example of that in the last piece), leaving room for soloing. At first, Léandre seems attracted by the Eastern heritage of the koto and its player: Her pizzicato emulates Sawaï's plucking, and when she briefly sings in track two, she uses Japanese inflections. But as the performance continues, she comes back to her usual, European self, which gives way to something less caricatured and more captivating. This is not a "West vs. East" clash; only two string instruments with different sonorities, two musicians using different techniques. Both try to shake off the shackles of their respective tradition. Here's the punchline: They succeed. ~ François Couture, Rovi |

Get Us out of Here/Doot Doot $17.99 While Karl Hyde and Rick Smith may have finally achieved success as dancefloor favorites Underworld in the '90s and noughties, they are surprisingly quiet about their ? 80s musical outlet, Freur. While their silence speaks volumes about how they feel about their past, Freur's fan base has remained loyal and passionate. The band didn't achieve the fame they deserved, but they were one of the most unique and memorable bands of the era. Using electronics as a starting point, Freur cleverly mixed guitars, piano, percussion and other instruments into their melting pot, creating an atmospheric and experimental sound that was just as organic as it was processed. Never overbaked, the quintet's songs were layered with melodies that walked the tightrope between haunting and beautiful. While they are best remembered for the track "Doot Doot" (and using a squiggle for their name), the band had so much more to offer and this release containing both of their albums is proof that they made a delicious pudding. Their 1983 debut album, Doot Doot, opens with the title track, a wonderfully gentle slice of ear candy that is not easily forgotten once you've let it sink under your skin. There is really nothing like it. Not quite a ballad, it is soothing without being maudlin, dark without being gothic, and romantic without being sappy. The rest of the album strays from the title track's musical formula, but they are all equally intriguing and melodic. "Tender Surrender" and "Whispering" have beautiful melodic choruses that will send chills up your spine. The singles "Runaway," "Matters of the Heart," and "Riders in the Night" are odd slices of pure twisted pop that should have been hits. The album reveals its secrets listen after listen and never overstays its welcome. The real attraction on this two-fer is the first appearance on CD of the seldom-heard sophomore album, Get Us Out of Here, originally released in 1985. This second album picks up where Doot Doot left off,... |

Kustom Deep End DE300HD 300w Bass Amplifier Head $439.99 The DE300HD bass head combines classic, punchy tube amp tones & touch with the robust articulation of solid-state power amp design. Utilizing a 12AX7 preamp in tandem with a Tube Gain control, players can drive the tube preamp to elicit natural tube overload in varying degrees. From funky clean to mean and aggressive, the Deep End tube preamp has it covered. The DE300HD delivers 300 watts (RMS) of defined, articulate power. And when cranked up, its exclusive Organic Clipping™ power amp circuit reacts like an all-tube amp, generating lower order, musical harmonics and natural clipping characteristics just like the best all-tube designs. It’s the classic power amp “growl” that bass players know and love, with a smooth transition from clean to grind. Another benefit of the Organic Clipping™ circuit is that a power amp limiter is no longer needed. Many amp builders use heavy power amp limiting to prevent unpleasant distortion characteristics typically generated when solid-state circuits are pushed hard. Organic Clipping™ makes limiting unnecessary because when the amp is cranked up, it overloads with the same tonality as a tube amp. There is also more usable volume on tap, so you can get louder while pushing the amp further into distortion. In addition to a classic, passive tone stack consisting of Bass, Mid and Treble controls, the DE300HD features an innovative new approach to solving EQ issues quickly and effectively. Called Room EQ, it consists of Low Contour and High Contour controls, each solving the most common tonal problems that bassists encounter when performing. For example, the High Contour control can reduce ear-fatiguing treble peaks that often occur when a room or venue has hard reflections or be used to reduce treble presence or “sizzle” when required. Low Contour can be used to provide low-end definition in a large, boomy room or function as a shelving control when pronounced low-end cuts are needed. Using both Room |

The Carolyn Hester Coalition $18.99 Carolyn Hester had been away from the recording scene for a few years when she re-emerged in the late 1960s as the centerpiece of the Carolyn Hester Coalition, a psychedelic- and folk-tinged rock group. It's hard to read this as anything but an attempt to keep up with the times on the part of someone who missed the boat that made folk and folk-rock a commercial proposition. Purism aside, this unexpected move wasn't a bad thing; Hester wasn't the greatest or most original folksinger anyway, so why not try something different? Her voice is still thin and almost unnaturally high, although not unappealingly so, on both rocked-up versions of folk songs she probably sang acoustically at one point ("East Virginia," "Let's Get Together") and tunes that are closer to fairly commercial psychedelic folk-rock. It's not the most organic combination, with trendy fuzz guitars flitting in and out of the arrangements from time to time. It's not bad, though, and the brooding cover of Ed McCurdy's anti-war song "Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream" is an effective interpretation of a significant composition that was overlooked by other folk-rock acts. Indeed the album, on that track and others, is more downcast than might be expected, Hester moaning at one point "half the world is starving, half the world is overfed, half take sleeping pills at night, half don't have a bed." ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi |
